About Dawlish
- The black swans of Dawlish Water are the town's most famous residents and have been a feature of the brook since the 19th century. The original birds were introduced from Australia, and the flock has been maintained ever since. The swans are so closely associated with Dawlish that they appear on the town's coat of arms and are depicted in the logo of Dawlish Town Council. Visitors come from across the country to see the swans, which are remarkably tame and accustomed to human company.
- The sea wall railway at Dawlish, built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and opened in 1846, is one of the most dramatic and precarious stretches of railway in Britain. The line runs along a narrow ledge between the red sandstone cliffs and the sea, with the track sometimes only metres from the breaking waves. In February 2014, a severe storm destroyed a section of the sea wall and washed away the track, cutting off the entire South West peninsula from the national rail network for eight weeks. The repair was one of the most complex and expensive in Network Rail's history.
- Dawlish was a fashionable seaside resort in the Regency and Victorian eras, attracting wealthy visitors from Exeter and London. Charles Dickens set the early chapters of "Nicholas Nickleby" in Dawlish, describing it as a place where "the air is fresh and the scenery beautiful." Jane Austen also visited the town and mentioned it in her letters. The town's Georgian and Victorian architecture reflects its prosperous past as a resort for the upper-middle classes.
