- Glastonbury Tor, the conical hill that rises 158 metres above the Somerset Levels and is crowned by the ruined tower of St Michael's Church, is one of the most iconic landscapes in England — a landmark that has been a place of pilgrimage, myth, and spiritual significance for thousands of years. The tor is associated with the Arthurian legend of Avalon — the island to which the mortally wounded King Arthur was taken after the Battle of Camlann — and with the story of Joseph of Arimathea, who is said to have brought the Holy Grail to Glastonbury and to have planted his staff in the ground at Wearyall Hill, where it took root as the Glastonbury Thorn. The tor's combination of natural drama and mythological resonance has made it one of the most visited sites in Somerset.
- Glastonbury Abbey, founded in the 7th century and claiming to be the oldest Christian foundation in Britain, was one of the wealthiest and most powerful monasteries in medieval England — a house that attracted pilgrims from across Europe to the shrines of St Dunstan and the supposed tomb of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere, which was 'discovered' by the monks in 1191 in circumstances that most historians regard as a medieval publicity stunt. The abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1539 and the last abbot, Richard Whiting, was hanged, drawn, and quartered on the Tor — one of the most brutal suppressions of the Dissolution.
