About Shepton Mallet
- Shepton Mallet Prison, which operated as a working prison from 1625 to 2013, is one of the oldest prisons in Britain and one of the most historically significant — a building that has housed some of the most notorious criminals in English history, including the highwayman Tom Pocock and, during the Second World War, American servicemen convicted of crimes under US military law. The prison was used by the US Army from 1942 to 1945 as a military detention centre, and 18 American servicemen were executed here during that period — the only executions carried out on British soil by a foreign power in modern times. The prison has been converted into a luxury hotel, and guests can stay in the former cells.
- Babycham, the sparkling perry that became one of the most popular drinks in Britain in the 1950s and 1960s, was invented in Shepton Mallet by Francis Showering, who developed the drink from the perry pears grown in the orchards of Somerset. The drink, which was marketed with the slogan 'I'd love a Babycham' and the image of a baby chamois deer, was the first alcoholic drink to be advertised on British television and became a symbol of the aspirational consumer culture of the postwar period. The Showering family's cider and perry business, which was based in Shepton Mallet, was one of the most important employers in the town for much of the 20th century.
- The Royal Bath and West Show, held at the showground on the edge of Shepton Mallet every May, is one of the oldest and most important agricultural shows in Britain — an event that has been held annually since 1852 and that attracts over 100,000 visitors to see livestock, machinery, food, and rural crafts. The show, which is organised by the Bath and West Society — founded in 1777 to promote agriculture and rural industries in the west of England — is one of the highlights of the Somerset calendar and one of the most important events in the British agricultural year.
