About Great Bedwyn
- The Crofton Beam Engines, which stand just outside Great Bedwyn on the Kennet and Avon Canal, are the oldest working beam engines in the world still in their original engine house. Built in 1812 and 1845, the engines were used to pump water from a spring to the summit level of the canal — the highest point on the Kennet and Avon — and kept the canal supplied with water for over a century. The engines were restored by volunteers in the 1960s and are now operated on steam weekends each year, drawing visitors from across the country to see these magnificent pieces of industrial heritage in action. The Kennet and Avon Canal itself, which passes through Great Bedwyn, was restored to navigation in 1990 after decades of dereliction and is now one of the most popular leisure waterways in England.
