About Hastings
- The Battle of Hastings, fought on 14 October 1066 at a site now known as Battle, a few miles from Hastings, was the most consequential battle in English history — the engagement in which William, Duke of Normandy, defeated and killed King Harold II and established the Norman dynasty that transformed England's language, culture, law, and social structure. The battle was fought on a ridge above the Hastings marshes, and William built Battle Abbey on the site of Harold's death as an act of penance and commemoration; the high altar of the abbey church was placed on the spot where Harold fell. The Bayeux Tapestry, embroidered in the years following the conquest, depicts the battle in extraordinary detail and is the most important visual record of the Norman Conquest.
- Hastings Old Town, the fishing community that clusters in the valley between the East and West Hills, is one of the most distinctive and atmospheric urban environments in the south of England — a place of narrow lanes, weatherboard cottages, and the famous net shops — tall, black-painted wooden structures used for storing fishing nets — that are unique to Hastings. The fishing fleet, which still operates from the beach at the Old Town, is the largest beach-launched fishing fleet in Britain, and the fishermen's quarter has been continuously inhabited since the medieval period. The Old Town has attracted artists and writers since the 19th century, and it remains one of the most characterful communities on the south coast.
- The Jerwood Gallery, which opened in 2012 on the Hastings seafront, houses the Jerwood Collection — one of the most significant collections of 20th and 21st-century British art in private hands, including works by Lucian Freud, Frank Auerbach, Paula Rego, and Bridget Riley. The gallery, designed by HAT Projects in a style that references the black-painted net shops of the Old Town, has been credited with contributing to the regeneration of Hastings and with establishing the town as a destination for art lovers.
