About Eastbourne
- Beachy Head, the chalk headland that rises 162 metres above the sea at the western end of Eastbourne, is the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain and one of the most dramatic coastal landscapes in the country. The headland, which marks the eastern end of the South Downs, offers views along the coast to Dungeness in the east and to the Isle of Wight in the west on clear days, and the lighthouse at its foot — painted in red and white stripes and accessible only by boat — is one of the most photographed lighthouses in Britain. The Seven Sisters, the series of chalk cliffs that extend westward from Beachy Head, are one of the most iconic landscapes in England and have been used as a filming location for numerous productions including the opening sequence of the 1944 film This Happy Breed.
- Eastbourne's reputation as a genteel seaside resort — sometimes caricatured as a retirement destination — conceals a more complex history as a planned Victorian town built from scratch on the Sussex coast. The town was developed from the 1850s onwards by the Duke of Devonshire, who owned much of the land, and it was designed from the beginning as a high-class resort for the wealthy, with wide boulevards, elegant hotels, and a seafront that was deliberately kept free of the funfairs and amusement arcades that characterised other seaside towns. The result is a town of unusual architectural consistency and quality, with a seafront that is still largely intact and a town centre that retains much of its Victorian character.
- The Towner Art Gallery, which reopened in a new building in 2009, is one of the most important regional art galleries in Britain — a collection that includes significant works by Eric Ravilious, the Sussex-born artist whose watercolours of the South Downs landscape are among the most distinctive images of the English countryside in the 20th century. Ravilious, who was born in Eastbourne in 1897 and trained at the Royal College of Art, developed a style of precise, luminous watercolour that captured the particular quality of light on the chalk downland of Sussex, and his images of the Downs, the coast, and the everyday objects of English life have become some of the most reproduced images in British art. Ravilious was killed in 1942 while serving as a war artist in Iceland.
