- Lewes Bonfire Night, held on 5 November every year, is the most spectacular Guy Fawkes celebration in Britain — an event that draws up to 80,000 visitors to the town and involves six separate bonfire societies, each with its own procession, costume, and bonfire. The celebration has its roots in the burning of seventeen Protestant martyrs in Lewes during the reign of Mary I, and the bonfire societies — which have names like the Cliffe Bonfire Society and the Commercial Square Bonfire Society — maintain traditions of costume, music, and ceremony that have been passed down for generations. The processions, which wind through the narrow streets of the town carrying flaming torches and effigies, are one of the most dramatic and atmospheric events in the English calendar.
- Glyndebourne, the opera house set in the grounds of a country house a few miles from Lewes, is one of the most prestigious opera venues in the world — a festival that has been held every summer since 1934 and that attracts audiences from across the world to hear performances of the highest quality in an idyllic rural setting.
