About Kinghorn
- King Alexander III of Scotland fell to his death from the cliffs above Kinghorn on the night of 18 March 1286, while riding to join his new wife at Kinghorn Castle. His horse stumbled in a storm and the king was thrown from the clifftop. His death without a clear heir triggered a succession crisis that led to the Wars of Scottish Independence and the rise of Robert the Bruce.
- The Alexander III Monument, erected on the clifftop in 1886 to mark the 600th anniversary of the king's death, is one of the most historically significant monuments in Fife. The monument stands at the exact spot where the king is believed to have fallen and offers panoramic views across the Forth to Edinburgh.
- Pettycur Bay, to the east of Kinghorn, was the main ferry crossing point between Fife and Edinburgh for centuries before the construction of the Forth Bridge. The ferry carried passengers, horses, and goods across the Forth, and the bay was a busy embarkation point for travellers heading to and from the north of Scotland.
- Kinghorn has one of the finest sandy beaches in Fife, sheltered by the headlands on either side of the bay. The beach is popular with families and swimmers in summer, and the clear water of the Forth makes it one of the best sea swimming spots on the east coast of Scotland.
