About Dysart
- Dysart was one of the most prosperous ports in Scotland in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, trading salt, coal, and cloth with the Low Countries and the Baltic states. The town's merchants grew wealthy from this trade, and many of the fine stone buildings that survive in the old town were built with the profits of the salt and coal trade.
- Pan Ha', the row of restored seventeenth-century houses on the harbourfront, takes its name from the salt pans that once operated along the shore. The houses were restored by the National Trust for Scotland in the 1960s and 1970s and are now private residences. They are considered some of the finest examples of Scottish vernacular architecture in Fife.
- John McDouall Stuart, the first European to cross Australia from south to north, was born in Dysart in 1815. Stuart made six expeditions into the Australian interior between 1858 and 1862, and his final successful crossing of the continent in 1862 opened up the interior of Australia to European settlement.
- St Serf's Tower, which stands above the harbour, is the remains of a pre-Reformation church dedicated to St Serf, the sixth-century missionary who is said to have brought Christianity to Fife. The tower is a scheduled ancient monument and one of the oldest surviving structures in Kirkcaldy.
