About East Wemyss
- The Wemyss Caves are a series of sea caves in the sandstone cliffs below East Wemyss, containing over 100 Pictish rock carvings dating from around the third to the ninth century AD. The carvings include animals, symbols, and abstract designs, and are among the most important examples of Pictish art in Scotland. The caves are managed by the Save Wemyss Ancient Caves Society.
- MacDuff's Castle, the ruins of which stand on the clifftop above the caves, was the stronghold of the MacDuff Earls of Fife in the medieval period. The castle is associated with the legend of Macduff in Shakespeare's Macbeth, although the historical connection is uncertain. The ruins are a scheduled ancient monument.
- Wemyss Castle, which stands on the headland above the caves, was the home of the Wemyss family for over 600 years. It was at Wemyss Castle in 1565 that Mary Queen of Scots first met Lord Darnley, who would become her second husband. The castle is still a private residence.
- The village of East Wemyss was a centre of coal mining from the seventeenth century until the closure of the Michael Colliery in 1967, following a major underground fire that killed nine men. The colliery disaster was one of the worst in the history of the Fife coalfield.
