About Buckhaven
- Buckhaven was one of the most important herring fishing ports on the Firth of Forth in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. At its peak the harbour was home to over 200 fishing boats, and the town's fishwives were known throughout Fife for walking as far as Edinburgh to sell their catch.
- The coal industry transformed Buckhaven in the late nineteenth century when the Wellesley Colliery opened nearby. The colliery became one of the largest in Fife, and thousands of miners moved to the town, creating a tight-knit working-class community that shaped the town's culture and politics for generations.
- Buckhaven Museum, housed in the local library, tells the story of the town's fishing and mining heritage through photographs, artefacts, and oral histories. The museum is one of the best small local history collections in Fife.
