About Methil
- Methil Docks, built in the 1880s and expanded several times in the early twentieth century, were among the busiest coal-exporting ports in Scotland. At their peak in the 1920s, the docks exported over five million tons of coal per year, shipped from the Fife coalfield to markets in Scandinavia, the Baltic states, and southern Europe.
- East Fife FC, founded in 1903 and based at Bayview Stadium in Methil, is the only club from outside the top two divisions of Scottish football to have won the Scottish Cup. The club won the cup in 1938, beating Kilmarnock in the final, and also won the Scottish League Cup three times in the 1940s and 1950s.
- The Wellesley Colliery, which operated near Methil from 1877 to 1967, was one of the most productive pits in the Fife coalfield. The colliery was connected to Methil Docks by a dedicated railway line, and at its peak employed over 2,000 men.
- The Energy Park Fife, developed on the site of the former Methil Docks, is a centre for renewable energy manufacturing and research. The park has been home to several wind turbine manufacturers and offshore energy companies, and represents the transformation of the area from a coal-exporting port to a hub for clean energy.
