About West Wemyss
- West Wemyss Harbour, one of the oldest harbours in Fife, was used for centuries to export coal from the Wemyss collieries to markets across Scotland and northern Europe. The harbour was built by the Wemyss family in the seventeenth century and was one of the most important coal-shipping ports on the Firth of Forth.
- The Wemyss Caves, which run beneath the cliffs between West Wemyss and East Wemyss, contain one of the most important collections of Pictish rock carvings in Scotland. The caves were used by Pictish people from around the third to the ninth century AD, and the carvings include animals, symbols, and abstract designs that are unique in Scottish archaeology.
- Wemyss Castle, which stands on the headland above the village, was the home of the Wemyss family for over 600 years. The castle is still a private residence and is one of the most historically significant buildings in Fife. It was at Wemyss Castle in 1565 that Mary Queen of Scots first met Lord Darnley.
- The Wemyss collieries, operated by the Wemyss family from the seventeenth century onwards, were among the first coal mines in Scotland to use steam engines for pumping and winding. The family's investment in new technology made the Wemyss coalfield one of the most productive in Fife.
