About Limekilns
- Limekilns is mentioned in Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Kidnapped, published in 1886, in which the hero David Balfour and his companion Alan Breck Stewart cross the Firth of Forth from Limekilns to escape their pursuers. Stevenson described the village as a pretty little place with a harbour and a row of cottages, and the description still fits today.
- The lime kilns at Limekilns and the adjacent village of Charlestown were among the largest in Scotland in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, producing lime from the local limestone quarries for use in agriculture and building. The lime was loaded onto ships at the harbour and transported to farms and building sites across Scotland.
- King James IV of Scotland is said to have visited Limekilns on several occasions in the early sixteenth century, and a building in the village known as the King's Cellar is traditionally associated with his visits. The building dates from the fifteenth century and is one of the oldest surviving structures in the village.
- The Fife Coastal Path passes through Limekilns, and the stretch between Limekilns and Charlestown is one of the most scenic sections of the route, with views across the Forth to Edinburgh and the Pentland Hills. The path follows the shoreline through woodland and past the historic limekilns.
