About Rosyth
- Rosyth Dockyard was established by the Royal Navy in 1909 and became one of the most important naval bases in Britain during both World Wars. The dockyard was used to refit and repair warships, and during the First World War it was the base for the Grand Fleet after the Battle of Jutland. The dockyard is now operated by Babcock International and continues to build and refit Royal Navy warships.
- HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales, the Royal Navy's two new aircraft carriers, were built at Rosyth Dockyard between 2009 and 2017. The carriers are the largest warships ever built in Britain, each displacing 65,000 tonnes and carrying a crew of over 1,600. Their construction was one of the most complex engineering projects in British history.
- Rosyth was built as a planned town in the early twentieth century to house workers at the new naval dockyard. The town was designed on a grid plan with wide streets, parks, and public buildings, and the original housing stock of brick terraces and semi-detached houses still forms the core of the town.
- The Forth Bridge, which can be seen from Rosyth, was completed in 1890 and is one of the most iconic engineering structures in the world. The bridge, which carries the Edinburgh to Dundee railway line, was the first major steel bridge in the world and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
