About Magherafelt
- Seamus Heaney, the poet who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1995 and who is widely regarded as the greatest Irish poet since W.B. Yeats, was born in Bellaghy, a few miles from Magherafelt, in 1939. Heaney's poetry, which draws deeply on the landscape, history, and people of County Londonderry — the boglands, the farms, the small towns, and the communities of mid-Ulster — is among the most celebrated in the English language, and his connection with the area around Magherafelt is one of the most important literary associations in Northern Ireland. The Seamus Heaney HomePlace in Bellaghy, which opened in 2016, is a state-of-the-art arts and literary centre that celebrates his life and work through exhibitions, events, and a permanent collection of manuscripts and personal objects.
- Lough Neagh, the largest freshwater lake in the British Isles, forms the eastern boundary of the Magherafelt area and is one of the most important natural features in mid-Ulster. The lough, which covers an area of 388 square kilometres, is one of the most important wildlife habitats in Ireland, supporting internationally significant populations of migratory birds and one of the most important eel fisheries in Europe. The lough's shores, which are largely undeveloped, provide a landscape of reed beds, water meadows, and woodland that is one of the most important wildlife corridors in Northern Ireland.
- Bellaghy Bawn, a few miles from Magherafelt, is one of the best-preserved examples of a Plantation bawn in Ulster — a fortified enclosure built in the early 17th century as part of the Plantation of Ulster to protect the new settlers from attack. The bawn, which was built by the Vintners' Company of London as part of their grant of land in County Londonderry, preserves two of its original flanker towers and gives a vivid impression of the defensive architecture of the Plantation period. The bawn is now managed by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency and is open to the public.
