About Maidstone
- Leeds Castle, a few miles east of Maidstone, is one of the most beautiful castles in England — a medieval fortress built on two islands in a lake in the Len valley, surrounded by 500 acres of parkland and gardens. The castle has been a royal residence since the reign of Edward I, who gave it to his queen Eleanor of Castile, and it was subsequently used by six medieval queens of England, earning it the title 'the loveliest castle in the world'. The castle was converted from a fortress into a country house in the Tudor period and was extensively restored in the 20th century by its last private owner, Lady Baillie, who furnished it with an extraordinary collection of French furniture, tapestries, and paintings. The castle is now open to the public and hosts a programme of events including open-air concerts and a hot-air balloon festival.
- Maidstone was the scene of one of the most dramatic episodes of the Peasants' Revolt of 1381 — the uprising in which the rebel leader Wat Tyler, who was himself from the Maidstone area, led a force of Kentish rebels to London, where they sacked the Savoy Palace, executed the Archbishop of Canterbury, and briefly held the city before Tyler was killed at Smithfield. The revolt began in Essex and Kent simultaneously, and the Kentish rebels gathered at Maidstone before marching to London; the town's role in the uprising reflects the deep grievances of the rural poor against the poll tax and the continuing restrictions of the feudal system. The revolt was suppressed, but it marked the beginning of the end of serfdom in England.

Hops were introduced to England from the Low Countries in the 15th century and Kent became the principal hop-growing county, supplying the London brewing industry with the ingredient that gives beer its bitterness and preservative qualities. The oast houses — circular or square kilns with distinctive conical roofs used for drying hops — are one of the most characteristic features of the Kentish landscape, and many have been converted into houses. The Museum of Kent Life at Sandling preserves the history of hop-picking, which until the 1960s brought thousands of East End Londoners to Kent every September for the harvest.
