About Tunbridge Wells
- The Pantiles, the colonnaded promenade at the heart of Tunbridge Wells, is one of the finest examples of Georgian town planning in England — a pedestrianised walkway lined with shops, restaurants, and cafés beneath a continuous colonnade, flanked by the chalybeate spring whose iron-rich waters first brought visitors to the town in the 17th century. The spring was discovered in 1606 by Dudley, Lord North, who was cured of a debilitating illness after drinking the waters, and the town grew up around the spring as a fashionable resort for the London aristocracy and gentry. The Pantiles takes its name from the square clay tiles that were laid on the walkway in the early 18th century, and the colonnade and the spring are still in use today — visitors can still drink the chalybeate water from the spring, dispensed by a dipper in traditional costume.
- Tunbridge Wells received the prefix 'Royal' in 1909 when Edward VII granted the town the right to use the title in recognition of its long association with the royal family — a connection that began when Queen Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles I, visited the spring in 1630 and the town became a fashionable resort for the court. The town's association with respectability, propriety, and conservative values has made it a byword for a certain kind of English middle-class opinion — the phrase 'disgusted of Tunbridge Wells' has been used since the 1970s to describe letters of complaint to newspapers from outraged members of the public, though the phrase is now used affectionately rather than critically.
- Penshurst Place, a few miles from Tunbridge Wells, is one of the finest medieval manor houses in England — a building that has been continuously inhabited since the 14th century and that preserves, in its Great Hall, one of the most complete examples of a medieval great hall in the country. The house was built in the 1340s by Sir John de Pulteney, a wealthy London merchant, and was later the home of the Sidney family, whose most famous member was the poet and soldier Sir Philip Sidney, born at Penshurst in 1554. Sidney's Arcadia, one of the most important prose works of the Elizabethan period, was written at Penshurst, and the house and its gardens — which include a walled garden that has been cultivated since the 14th century — are now open to the public.
