About Newport-on-Tay
- Newport-on-Tay sits at the southern end of the Tay Road Bridge, which opened in 1966 and was at the time the longest road bridge in the United Kingdom. The bridge, which is 2.25 kilometres long, transformed the relationship between Newport and Dundee, making the crossing a matter of minutes rather than the half-hour ferry journey it had previously required.
- The Tay Rail Bridge, which can be seen from Newport, was the scene of one of the worst railway disasters in British history. On the night of 28 December 1879, during a violent storm, the central section of the bridge collapsed as a train was crossing, killing all 75 passengers and crew on board. The disaster led to major changes in bridge engineering standards.
- Newport-on-Tay grew as a commuter settlement for Dundee in the Victorian era, when wealthy Dundee merchants and professionals built large villas on the south bank of the Tay to escape the smoke and noise of the city. The village retains many of these fine Victorian houses, which give it a prosperous, residential character.
- Wormit, adjacent to Newport-on-Tay, is the village at the southern end of the Tay Rail Bridge. The bridge's southern approach runs through Wormit, and the village has a small museum dedicated to the history of the bridge and the 1879 disaster.
