About Norton
- Norton Parish Church, which dates from the 11th century, is one of the oldest churches in Teesside. The church contains a remarkable collection of Saxon stonework, including a carved cross shaft that is one of the finest examples of Anglo-Saxon sculpture in the north of England. The churchyard contains the graves of several generations of the families who shaped the early history of Stockton and the surrounding area.
- Norton was the home of the Heavisides family, who were among the earliest supporters of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. The railway, which opened in 1825, passed through the outskirts of Norton on its way from Shildon to Stockton, and the town was one of the first communities in the world to be served by a steam-hauled public railway.

The museum is set in a Victorian mansion and includes a recreated Victorian street with shops, a pub, and a chemist.
