About Robin Hood's Bay
- Robin Hood's Bay was one of the most notorious smuggling centres on the Yorkshire coast in the 18th century. The village's maze of narrow lanes, hidden passages, and interconnected cellars made it ideal for concealing contraband — gin, brandy, tea, and silk — brought ashore from Dutch and French ships. According to local tradition, a bale of silk could be passed from the shore to the top of the village without ever going outside, through a network of secret passages connecting the houses.
- The village is the eastern terminus of Alfred Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk, a 192-mile long-distance footpath from St Bees on the Cumbrian coast. Walkers completing the route traditionally dip their boots in the sea at Robin Hood's Bay, having started by dipping them in the Irish Sea at St Bees. The walk passes through the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, and the North York Moors.
- The rocky shore at Robin Hood's Bay is one of the finest fossil-hunting locations in England. The Jurassic rocks exposed on the shore contain an abundance of ammonites, belemnites, and other marine fossils, and the bay is a popular destination for amateur palaeontologists. The fossils were formed about 180 million years ago when the area was covered by a warm, shallow sea.
- The village is built on both sides of a narrow ravine cut by a stream, and the houses are so tightly packed that some overhang the stream. The village is accessible only on foot from the car park above — the narrow lanes are too steep and narrow for most vehicles. The lower village, with its pubs, shops, and galleries, is one of the most visited destinations on the Yorkshire coast.
