About Runswick Bay
- Runswick Bay is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful villages on the English coast. The cottages are built on such a steep slope that the roof of one house is level with the garden of the house above it, and the narrow lanes between them are too steep for vehicles. The village was almost entirely washed into the sea in a landslide in 1682, and the present village was rebuilt on the hillside above the original site.
- The bay at Runswick is one of the finest swimming beaches on the Yorkshire coast, with a long arc of golden sand sheltered by the headlands on either side. The beach is popular with families in summer and is one of the few sandy beaches on the otherwise rocky Cleveland coast. The water quality is consistently high and the beach has held the Blue Flag award.
- The Cleveland Way long-distance footpath passes along the cliff top above Runswick Bay, and the stretch of coast between Runswick and Staithes to the north is one of the most dramatic on the entire route.
