About Loftus
- Loftus was at the heart of the Cleveland ironstone mining industry in the 19th century. The ironstone seams in the hills above the town were among the richest in England, and the mines employed thousands of workers at their peak. The ironstone was transported by rail to the blast furnaces of Teesside, where it was smelted into pig iron and steel. The last ironstone mine in the area closed in the 1960s.
- Skinningrove, two miles north of Loftus, is a former fishing and mining village in a narrow valley that runs down to the sea. The village has a remarkable industrial heritage — ironstone was mined here from the 1850s, and the valley was dominated by a large ironworks until its closure in the 1980s. The Skinningrove Fishing Museum, housed in a former fish shed on the beach, tells the story of the village's fishing community.
- The Cleveland Hills above Loftus are part of the North York Moors National Park and offer outstanding walking country. The Cleveland Way long-distance footpath passes through the hills, and the views from the escarpment take in the North Sea and the Tees Valley.
