About Brotton
- Brotton was at the heart of the Cleveland ironstone mining boom of the 19th century. The ironstone seams in the hills above the village were among the richest in England, and the mines employed hundreds of workers at their peak. The ironstone was transported by a mineral railway down to the coast at Skinningrove, where it was loaded onto ships for the blast furnaces of Teesside. The last mine in the area closed in the 1960s.
