About Skelton-in-Cleveland
- Skelton Castle, a Gothic Revival mansion built in the 18th century on the site of a medieval castle, is one of the most unusual country houses in Cleveland. The castle was built by John Hall Stevenson, a friend of Laurence Sterne, who used it as the model for Crazy Castle in his novel Tristram Shandy. The present building is largely the work of the 19th century and is a private residence.
- Skelton was historically an ironstone mining community, and the surrounding hills are riddled with the remains of 19th-century ironstone workings. The ironstone mined here was used in the blast furnaces of Teesside, which produced much of the steel used in the construction of the British Empire. The mining industry declined in the early 20th century, and the last mine closed in the 1960s.
- The Cleveland Hills above Skelton are part of the North York Moors National Park and offer outstanding walking country. The Cleveland Way long-distance footpath passes through the hills, and the views from the escarpment take in the Tees Valley and the North Sea. The hills are an important habitat for upland birds including red grouse, curlew, and golden plover.
- Skelton is one of several villages in the Cleveland Hills that were transformed by the ironstone mining boom of the 19th century. The population grew rapidly as workers flooded in from across the north of England and from Ireland, and the village expanded with rows of terraced houses built to accommodate the mining families. The legacy of this industrial past is still visible in the architecture of the village.
