About Saltburn-by-the-Sea
- Saltburn Pier, built in 1869, is the last remaining pier on the north-east coast of England. The original pier was 1,500 feet long, but storm damage reduced it to its current length of 681 feet. The pier was restored in the 1990s and is now a Grade II listed structure. The adjacent cliff tramway — a water-balanced funicular railway built in 1884 — is the oldest surviving water-balanced cliff tramway in the world.
- Saltburn was purpose-built as a seaside resort by Henry Pease, a Quaker industrialist from Darlington, who was inspired by a vision of a town on the cliffs above the sea. Pease laid out the town on a grid plan with wide streets and substantial Victorian villas, and the Zetland Hotel — now converted to flats — was the first hotel in England to be served directly by railway. The town retains much of its original Victorian character.
- Saltburn Beach is one of the best surf beaches on the north-east coast of England, with consistent waves that attract surfers from across the region. The beach hosts regular surf competitions, and the Saltburn Surf Club is one of the most active in the north of England. The combination of surf, Victorian architecture, and independent shops has made Saltburn one of the trendiest destinations in Teesside.
- Huntcliff, the dramatic headland at the northern end of Saltburn Beach, rises 150 feet above the sea and offers spectacular views along the Cleveland coast. The headland is an important seabird colony, with nesting fulmars, kittiwakes, and guillemots on the cliff face. The Cleveland Way long-distance footpath passes along the cliff top, and the views from Huntcliff take in the Tees estuary and the Yorkshire coast.
