About Torphichen
- Torphichen Preceptory was the Scottish headquarters of the Knights Hospitaller, a medieval military and religious order. The preceptory was founded in the twelfth century and the surviving tower and transepts are among the best-preserved examples of Hospitaller architecture in Britain. The site is managed by Historic Environment Scotland and is open to the public.
- Cairnpapple Hill, a short drive from the village, is one of the most important prehistoric sites in Scotland. The hill was used as a ceremonial and burial site from around 3000 BC to 1400 BC, and the remains of a henge monument, cairns, and burials have been excavated on the summit. The site is managed by Historic Environment Scotland.
- Beecraigs Country Park, close to Torphichen, covers over 900 acres of woodland, farmland, and a reservoir in the Bathgate Hills. The park has a deer farm, a trout fishery, a climbing wall, and extensive walking and cycling trails.
- Torphichen was historically an important sanctuary town. The Knights Hospitaller granted the right of sanctuary to anyone who could reach the preceptory, and boundary stones marking the extent of the sanctuary area are still visible in the surrounding countryside.
