About Weymouth
- Weymouth's Georgian seafront, which was developed in the late 18th century following the patronage of George III — who visited the town for his health from 1789 onwards and is said to have been the first monarch to bathe in the sea — is one of the finest examples of Regency seaside architecture in Britain. The king's visits transformed Weymouth from a quiet fishing port into a fashionable resort, and the terraces of Georgian houses that line the esplanade, together with the statue of George III that stands at the northern end of the seafront, are a monument to this royal connection. The king's bathing machine, from which he entered the sea to the accompaniment of a band playing 'God Save the King', is one of the most charming anecdotes in the history of the British seaside.
- Chesil Beach, the 18-mile barrier beach that runs from Weymouth to Portland Bill, is one of the most remarkable natural features in Britain — a ridge of shingle that has been built up by wave action over thousands of years and that separates the Fleet lagoon from the sea. The beach is famous for the way the pebbles are graded by size from west to east — from pea-sized at the western end to fist-sized at Portland — a phenomenon that allowed local fishermen to determine their position in fog by feeling the size of the pebbles. The Fleet lagoon behind the beach is one of the most important wildlife habitats in Dorset, supporting populations of little egret, mute swan, and the rare Cetti's warbler.
