About Dorchester
- Thomas Hardy, the novelist and poet who is the most important literary figure associated with Dorset, was born in the village of Higher Bockhampton a few miles from Dorchester in 1840, and he used the town and its surroundings as the setting for most of his novels under the name 'Casterbridge'. Hardy's Dorset — the county he called 'Wessex' — is one of the most completely realised fictional landscapes in English literature, and the connection between the real places and their fictional counterparts is so precise that readers can follow Hardy's characters through the actual landscape. Max Gate, the house Hardy designed and built for himself on the edge of Dorchester in 1885, is now managed by the National Trust and is open to the public.
- Maiden Castle, the vast Iron Age hillfort on the chalk downland south of Dorchester, is the largest and most complex hillfort in Britain — a massive earthwork enclosing 47 acres, with multiple lines of ramparts and ditches that were built and elaborated over a period of 2,000 years from the Neolithic to the Iron Age. The fort was one of the most important settlements in pre-Roman Britain, with a population of several thousand people, and it was captured by the Roman Second Legion under Vespasian in around 43 AD in one of the most dramatic episodes of the Roman conquest. The excavations carried out by Mortimer Wheeler in the 1930s revealed evidence of the Roman assault, including a war cemetery containing the bodies of defenders killed in the attack.
- The Tolpuddle Martyrs, the six agricultural labourers from the Dorset village of Tolpuddle who were transported to Australia in 1834 for forming a trade union, are one of the most important figures in the history of the British labour movement. The men, who were convicted under an obscure law against the administration of unlawful oaths, became a cause célèbre for the emerging trade union movement, and a campaign for their release attracted hundreds of thousands of signatures and led to their pardon and return to England in 1836. The Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival, held in the village every July, is one of the most important events in the trade union calendar and attracts thousands of visitors to the Dorset countryside.
