About Woking
- Woking is the setting for the opening of H.G. Wells's The War of the Worlds, published in 1898 — the novel in which Martian invaders land on Horsell Common, just outside the town, and proceed to devastate the south of England with their heat rays and black smoke before being killed by terrestrial bacteria. Wells lived in Woking from 1895 to 1896 and used the town and its surroundings as the setting for the invasion, describing the Martians' landing cylinder on Horsell Common, the destruction of Woking town centre, and the narrator's flight through the Surrey countryside with a vividness that drew on his intimate knowledge of the local landscape. A large bronze sculpture of a Martian tripod stands in the town centre as a monument to Wells's connection with Woking.
- Brookwood Cemetery, on the western edge of Woking, is the largest cemetery in the United Kingdom and one of the largest in the world — a 500-acre site established in 1854 to relieve the overcrowding of London's burial grounds, connected to London by a dedicated funeral railway that carried coffins and mourners from a private station at Waterloo. The cemetery, which was designed by the landscape architect Sydney Smirke, contains the graves of over 235,000 people from over 80 countries, including soldiers from both World Wars, members of the royal family, and notable figures from British public life. The cemetery's military sections, which include the graves of soldiers from the Commonwealth and from many other nations, are among the most moving in Britain.
- The Shah Jahan Mosque in Woking, built in 1889, was the first purpose-built mosque in Britain and one of the first in northern Europe — a building that marked the beginning of the permanent Muslim presence in Britain and that has played a significant role in the development of British Islam. The mosque was built by Dr Gottlieb Wilhelm Leitner, a Hungarian-born orientalist who had served as principal of Government College Lahore, and it was funded by the Begum of Bhopal. The mosque, which is built in a Mughal style with a distinctive green dome, is now a Grade II* listed building and continues to serve the Muslim community of Woking.
