- Woking is the setting for the opening of H.G. Wells's The War of the Worlds, published in 1898 — the novel in which Martian invaders land on Horsell Common, just outside the town, and proceed to devastate the south of England with their heat rays and black smoke before being killed by terrestrial bacteria. Wells lived in Woking from 1895 to 1896 and used the town and its surroundings as the setting for the invasion, describing the Martians' landing cylinder on Horsell Common, the destruction of Woking town centre, and the narrator's flight through the Surrey countryside with a vividness that drew on his intimate knowledge of the local landscape.
