- Beggar's Bridge, a graceful single-arch packhorse bridge over the River Esk at Glaisdale, was built in 1619 by Thomas Ferris — a local man who, according to tradition, built the bridge so that his sweetheart Agnes Richardson could cross the river to meet him without getting her feet wet. Ferris went on to make his fortune as a merchant in Hull and returned to build the bridge as a gift to the village.
