About Kilton
- Kilton Castle, the ruins of which stand on a promontory above the valley, was a medieval fortification built by the de Thweng family in the 12th century. The castle was one of several fortifications in the East Cleveland hills that guarded the approaches to the coast. The ruins are fragmentary but the earthworks of the castle mound are still clearly visible.
- The hamlet of Kilton sits in a sheltered valley in the East Cleveland hills, and the surrounding countryside is typical of the ironstone mining landscape of the area. The valley is crossed by several footpaths that connect Kilton to the surrounding villages and to the Cleveland Way on the coast.
- The area around Kilton is rich in industrial archaeology, with the remains of 19th-century ironstone workings visible in the hills above the hamlet. The landscape has been shaped by over a century of mineral extraction, and the spoil heaps and tramway routes of the Victorian mining industry are a distinctive feature of the East Cleveland hills.
- Kilton is within easy reach of Saltburn-by-the-Sea, one of the finest Victorian seaside resorts on the Yorkshire coast. Saltburn's cliff tramway — the oldest water-balanced cliff tramway in the world — connects the town to the beach below, and the pier is one of the last surviving on the Yorkshire coast.
