About Colinton
- Robert Louis Stevenson, the author of Treasure Island and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, spent many childhood holidays at Colinton Manse, the home of his maternal grandfather the Reverend Lewis Balfour. Stevenson later wrote fondly of his time in Colinton, and the village's dell, church, and surrounding landscape are reflected in several of his works. A garden at Colinton Castle commemorates his connection to the area.
- Colinton Dell, a wooded gorge carved by the Water of Leith, is one of Edinburgh's most beautiful natural spaces and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The dell contains ancient woodland, dramatic rock faces, and a restored tunnel that was part of the Balerno Branch Railway, which ran through the valley from 1874 until 1967.
- Colinton Castle, of which only ruins remain, was the seat of the Foulis family from the fifteenth century and later passed to the Trotter family. The castle grounds are now incorporated into a private residential development, but the ruins are visible from the surrounding paths and serve as a reminder of the area's long aristocratic history.
