About Juniper Green
- Juniper Green takes its name from the juniper bushes that once grew abundantly on the hillsides above the Water of Leith valley. The village developed as a milling community in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with a series of mills along the river processing grain, paper, and snuff. The remains of several mill buildings can still be seen along the Water of Leith Walkway.
- The Balerno Branch Railway, which ran through the Water of Leith valley from 1874 until 1967, connected Juniper Green and the surrounding villages to Edinburgh city centre. The line was used primarily for freight and commuter traffic, and its closure was part of the Beeching cuts that reduced the rural railway network across Britain. The trackbed now forms part of the Water of Leith Walkway.
- Baberton Golf Club, which borders Juniper Green, was founded in 1893 and is one of Edinburgh's most respected parkland courses. The course was designed by Willie Park Jr, a two-time Open Championship winner, and its mature tree-lined fairways and challenging layout have made it a favourite among Edinburgh golfers for over a century.
