About Slateford
- The Slateford Aqueduct, built in 1822 to carry the Union Canal over the Water of Leith, is one of the finest examples of canal engineering in Scotland. The eight-arch stone aqueduct stands over twenty metres above the river and was designed by Hugh Baird, the engineer of the Union Canal. It is a Category A listed structure and a popular destination for walkers and canal enthusiasts.
- Slateford was historically associated with the paper-making industry, with several mills along the Water of Leith producing paper for Edinburgh's printing and publishing trade. The last of these mills closed in the twentieth century, but the millstones and weirs associated with the industry can still be seen along the river walkway.
- The area around Slateford was the site of the Battle of Colinton in 1650, when Cromwell's New Model Army defeated a Scottish force defending the approaches to Edinburgh. The battle was part of the wider conflict following the execution of Charles I, and its outcome opened the way for Cromwell's occupation of Edinburgh.
