About Commondale
- Commondale sits at over 800 feet above sea level on the edge of the Cleveland Hills, making it one of the highest inhabited settlements in the North York Moors. The village's distinctive red brick cottages were built in the nineteenth century to house workers at the local brickworks, which exploited the area's rich deposits of clay. The Esk Valley Railway, which stops at Commondale, runs for 35 miles from Middlesbrough to Whitby through some of the most spectacular moorland scenery in England and is one of the few rural railways in the North of England to have survived the Beeching cuts of the 1960s.
