About Craigmillar
- Craigmillar Castle, which dates from the early fifteenth century, is one of the most complete and best-preserved medieval castles in Scotland. Mary Queen of Scots stayed at the castle in 1566 following the murder of her secretary David Rizzio, and it was here that the "Craigmillar Bond" was allegedly drawn up — a document in which Scottish nobles agreed to the murder of her husband Lord Darnley.
- The area around Craigmillar was the site of one of Edinburgh's most ambitious post-war housing schemes, built in the 1930s and expanded in the 1950s to rehouse residents from the Old Town slums. The scheme became one of the largest council housing estates in Scotland, and the community's subsequent challenges with poverty and unemployment shaped decades of social policy debate.
- Little France, the area adjacent to Craigmillar where the new Royal Infirmary was built, takes its name from the French retinue that accompanied Mary Queen of Scots when she returned from France in 1561. The French courtiers and servants who accompanied her are said to have settled in this area, giving it its distinctive name.
