About Gilmerton
- Gilmerton Cove is a network of hand-carved underground passages and chambers discovered beneath a house on Drum Street. The cove consists of several rooms connected by low tunnels, all carved from the sandstone bedrock, and includes what appear to be a fireplace, a forge, and seating areas. The origin and purpose of the cove remain genuinely mysterious — theories range from a Jacobite meeting place to a blacksmith's workshop to a Covenanters' refuge.
- Gilmerton was historically a separate village from Edinburgh, and its character as a mining and quarrying community gave it a distinct identity from the more prosperous city to the north. The local sandstone was quarried extensively for building material, and the underground workings associated with this industry may partly explain the network of passages beneath the village.
- The Drum Estate, which borders Gilmerton, was the seat of the Somerville family for several centuries and later passed through various aristocratic hands.
