Taxis in Culross— Licensed Local Taxis & Private Hire
Scotland's most perfectly preserved medieval town — cobbled streets, a royal palace, and a timeless Forth-side setting.
Culross is one of the most remarkable small towns in Scotland, a perfectly preserved example of a Scottish burgh from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Its cobbled streets, crow-stepped gabled houses, and ochre-painted buildings have changed little since the town was a prosperous centre of salt panning and coal mining. The town is managed by the National Trust for Scotland and has been used as a filming location for the television series Outlander. Culross Palace, the Study, and the Town House are all open to visitors. Joe Maxi Taxis serves Culross with airport transfers and journeys across Fife and Edinburgh. About Culross
- Culross Palace was built between 1597 and 1611 by Sir George Bruce of Carnock, who made his fortune from coal mining and salt panning. The palace is one of the finest examples of a Scottish merchant's house from the early seventeenth century, with original painted ceilings, period furniture, and a recreated seventeenth-century garden. It is managed by the National Trust for Scotland.
- Culross was the birthplace of Saint Mungo, the patron saint of Glasgow, who was born here around 518 AD. According to tradition, his mother Thenew was cast adrift on the Forth and came ashore at Culross, where she gave birth to the child who would later found the city of Glasgow.
- The town's prosperity in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries was built on two industries: coal mining, using a remarkable underwater mine that extended beneath the Forth, and salt panning, which used the coal to evaporate seawater in large iron pans. At its peak Culross exported salt and coal to the Baltic states and the Low Countries.
- Culross has been used as a filming location for the television series Outlander, which is set in eighteenth-century Scotland. The town's cobbled streets and period buildings have appeared in multiple episodes, and it has become a popular destination for fans of the show from around the world.
