About Dormanstown
- Dormanstown was built between 1917 and 1923 by Dorman Long & Co, one of the largest steel manufacturers in Britain, to house workers at their steelworks on the south bank of the Tees. The village was designed by the architect Luke Doyle in the Arts and Crafts style, with wide tree-lined streets, a village green, and a range of community facilities including a church, a school, and a recreation ground.
- Dorman Long was one of the most important steel companies in British history. The company built the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Tyne Bridge, and at its peak employed tens of thousands of workers across Teesside. The steelworks at Redcar were among the largest in Europe, and the blast furnaces dominated the skyline of the Tees Valley for over a century.
