About Falkland
- Falkland Palace was built by James IV and James V of Scotland in the early sixteenth century as a hunting palace and pleasure retreat. James V, who died at Falkland in 1542 after hearing of the birth of his daughter Mary — the future Mary Queen of Scots — is said to have uttered the famous words 'It cam wi a lass, it will gang wi a lass', predicting the end of the Stuart dynasty.
- The real tennis court at Falkland Palace, built in 1539, is the oldest surviving real tennis court in Britain and one of the oldest in the world. Real tennis — the original form of tennis from which lawn tennis was derived — is still played at Falkland, making it one of only a handful of real tennis courts in Scotland.
- The East Lomond Hill, which rises to 424 metres above Falkland, is one of the most distinctive landmarks in Fife. The hill is topped by an Iron Age hillfort and offers panoramic views across the Howe of Fife, the Tay estuary, and on clear days as far as the Cairngorms.
- Falkland is managed by the Falkland Estate, which is owned by the Crichton Stuart family. The estate covers much of the surrounding countryside and has been managed for conservation and traditional land use for over a century. The village itself is largely owned by the National Trust for Scotland.
