About Galashiels
- Galashiels has been the heart of the Scottish Borders textile trade since the 13th century, and the town's motto — 'Sour Plums' — commemorates an incident in 1337 when local men surprised a party of English soldiers stealing plums from a tree, killing them all. The town's textile mills produced the distinctive Galashiels grey cloth that was exported across the world, and the industry's legacy is preserved at the Scottish Galashiels Museum.
- Abbotsford House, two miles from Galashiels on the south bank of the Tweed, was the home of Sir Walter Scott from 1812 until his death in 1832. Scott designed the house himself in a romantic Scottish Baronial style, filling it with historical artefacts and a library of 9,000 volumes. The house is now a museum and one of the most visited literary sites in Scotland.
- The Borders Railway, which reopened in 2015 after a 46-year closure, has transformed connectivity between Galashiels and Edinburgh. The line follows the route of the original Waverley Route, which was controversially closed by British Rail in 1969 in one of the most controversial decisions of the Beeching cuts. The reopening was the longest new domestic railway line built in Britain for over a century.
