About Peebles
- Peebles has been a royal burgh since 1367, and the town's motto — 'Against the stream they multiply' — refers to the salmon that run through the Tweed beneath the medieval bridge. The Tweed here is one of Scotland's finest salmon rivers, and the pools below Neidpath Castle are among the most celebrated beats on the entire river.
- Glentress Forest, a few miles east of Peebles, is one of the most visited mountain bike destinations in Britain. The 7stanes trail network at Glentress includes routes graded from green to black, and the forest has hosted rounds of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup. The Buzzard's Nest café at the trailhead is a landmark in its own right.
- Neidpath Castle, perched on a rocky bluff above the Tweed a mile west of town, is a 14th-century tower house that survived a siege by Cromwell's forces in 1650 — one of the last Borders strongholds to hold out. The castle was later owned by the Duke of Queensberry, who was famously condemned by William Wordsworth in a sonnet for felling the ancient trees of the estate.
