About Innerleithen
- Innerleithen's mountain bike trails, developed on the steep hillsides above the town from the early 2000s, are now among the most technically demanding and celebrated in the world. The Innerleithen trails — including the legendary 'Tricky Trev' and 'Matador' descents — have hosted rounds of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup and the Enduro World Series, and the town fills with riders from across Europe during the summer race season.
- Traquair House, a mile south of Innerleithen on the south bank of the Tweed, is the oldest continuously inhabited house in Scotland. The house has been occupied since 1107, and 27 Scottish and English monarchs have visited, including Mary Queen of Scots and Bonnie Prince Charlie. The famous Bear Gates at the end of the avenue have been locked since 1745, when the Earl of Traquair vowed they would not be opened until a Stuart king sat on the throne again.
- Robert Smail's Printing Works, in the High Street of Innerleithen, is a complete Victorian printing works preserved exactly as it was when it closed in 1986. The works, now in the care of the National Trust for Scotland, contains the original machinery, type cases, and business records of the Smail family, who printed the local newspaper and stationery for the Borders community for over a century. Visitors can watch demonstrations of hand-setting type and operating the original presses.
- St Ronan's Well, the sulphur spring that made Innerleithen famous as a spa town in the early 19th century, was immortalised by Sir Walter Scott in his 1824 novel St Ronan's Well. Scott's novel brought fashionable visitors from Edinburgh and beyond to take the waters, and the town built a pump room and assembly rooms to accommodate them. The well still flows, and the annual St Ronan's Games — a festival of traditional sports and pageantry — have been held in the town since 1827.
