About Walkerburn
- Walkerburn was founded in 1854 by Henry Ballantyne, who built the Tweedvale Mill and the village around it to house his workers. Ballantyne's mill produced high-quality woollen cloth for the export market, and the village was designed as a model industrial community, with a school, a church, and a reading room provided for the workers. The mill closed in the 1990s, but the village retains its Victorian character.
- The River Tweed at Walkerburn is one of the finest salmon fishing rivers in Scotland, and the pools below the village are among the most productive on the middle Tweed. The Tweed is a spate river, and the best fishing is in autumn when the salmon are running upstream to spawn. The river is managed by the River Tweed Commission, which has overseen a remarkable recovery in salmon stocks since the 1990s.
- The Tweed Valley Forest Park, which extends across the hills above Walkerburn, offers some of the finest walking and mountain biking in the Borders.
