About Hawick
- Hawick's cashmere industry dates to the early 19th century, when local mills began importing raw cashmere from Mongolia and Kashmir to blend with the fine wool of Cheviot sheep. At its peak, the town had over 30 mills producing knitwear for the world's most prestigious retailers. Pringle of Scotland, founded in Hawick in 1815, invented the twinset and dressed royalty, film stars, and golfers across the 20th century.
- The Common Riding, held each June, is the oldest and most celebrated of the Borders common ridings — a week of pageantry centred on the riding of the town's ancient marches on horseback. The ceremony commemorates a victory over English raiders at Hornshole in 1514, when local youths defeated a party of English soldiers returning from Flodden. The Cornet, a young unmarried man elected to lead the riding, carries the town flag throughout the week.
- Hawick RFC, founded in 1873, is one of the most successful clubs in Scottish rugby history. The club has won the Scottish Premiership more times than any other, and has produced a remarkable number of Scottish internationals — including Jim Renwick, Colin Deans, and Tony Stanger, who scored the winning try against England in the 1990 Grand Slam decider at Murrayfield.
- Drumlanrig's Tower, a 16th-century tower house in the centre of Hawick, is one of the best-preserved examples of a Borders peel tower in existence. The tower was built by the Douglas family and later became the town house of the Dukes of Queensberry. It now houses the Tower Hotel and a small museum, and its distinctive pink sandstone facade is one of the most photographed buildings in the Borders.
