About Denholm
- Sir James Murray, born in Denholm in 1837, was the first and greatest editor of the Oxford English Dictionary — the most ambitious lexicographical project in the history of the English language. Murray spent 36 years editing the dictionary, working from a corrugated iron shed in his garden in Oxford that he called the 'Scriptorium'. He died in 1915 before the dictionary was completed, having personally edited entries from A to T. A monument on Denholm village green commemorates his achievement.
- John Leyden, born in Denholm in 1775, was a poet, linguist, and orientalist who became one of the most remarkable scholars of his generation. A close friend of Sir Walter Scott, Leyden contributed to Scott's Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border and went on to master over 30 languages, including Sanskrit, Persian, and Malay. He died in Java in 1811 at the age of 35, having served as a judge and linguist in the service of the East India Company. A monument on the village green commemorates his life.
- Denholm village green, one of the largest and finest in the Borders, is the centrepiece of the village. The green is surrounded by 18th and 19th-century stone-built cottages and farmhouses, and the two monuments to Leyden and Murray stand at either end. The green is used for the annual Denholm Games, a traditional sports day that has been held in the village for over a century.
- Ruberslaw Hill, which rises to 424 metres above the Teviot valley south of Denholm, is one of the most prominent landmarks in the Borders. The hill was the site of an Iron Age hillfort and a Roman signal station, and the views from the summit take in the full sweep of the Borders from the Cheviot Hills to the Eildon Hills. The hill is a popular walking destination, and the ascent from Denholm takes about an hour.
