About Ancrum

  • The Battle of Ancrum Moor, fought in February 1545, was one of the most significant Scottish victories of the Wars of the Rough Wooing — the military campaign by which Henry VIII of England attempted to force a marriage between his son Edward and the infant Mary Queen of Scots. A Scottish force under Archibald Douglas, Earl of Angus, ambushed an English raiding party that had been burning and looting in the Borders, and the English force was routed with heavy losses. The battle is notable for the story of Lilliard, a Scottish woman who is said to have fought in the battle after her lover was killed, and whose grave — Lilliard's Edge — is marked by a stone on the moor above Ancrum.
