About St Boswells
- Dryburgh Abbey, a mile south of St Boswells on a wooded bend of the Tweed, is the most romantically situated of the four great Borders abbeys. Founded in 1150 for Premonstratensian canons, the abbey was repeatedly destroyed by English raids and never fully rebuilt, giving it a ruined grandeur that inspired Sir Walter Scott and J.M.W. Turner. Scott is buried in the north transept alongside his son-in-law John Gibson Lockhart, and Field Marshal Earl Haig — commander of the British forces in the First World War — is buried in the nave.
- St Boswells Fair, held on the village green each July on St Boswell's Day, was once the largest horse fair in Scotland — drawing dealers, farmers, and travellers from across the country to buy and sell horses, cattle, and goods. The fair has been held continuously since the 12th century, and at its peak in the 19th century attracted over 10,000 visitors. The fair still takes place, though on a much smaller scale, and the village green — one of the largest in Scotland — is the centrepiece of the village.
- Mertoun House Gardens, on the north bank of the Tweed opposite St Boswells, are among the finest in the Borders. The walled garden, which covers over two acres, contains a remarkable collection of herbaceous plants, roses, and fruit trees, and the circular dovecote — one of the oldest in Scotland — is a listed building. The gardens are open to the public on Sunday afternoons in summer.
- Bemersyde House, two miles east of St Boswells, has been the home of the Haig family since the 12th century — one of the longest continuous family occupancies of any house in Scotland. The house was given to Field Marshal Earl Haig by a grateful nation after the First World War, and his descendants still live there. Thomas the Rhymer's prophecy — 'Tyde what may, whate'er betide, Haig shall be Haig of Bemersyde' — has proved remarkably accurate.
